Dear Friend of the Arboretum:

fiddleheads

Pre-schoolers enjoying the new Fiddleheads Forest School program at the Arboretum.

Even during the dark and chilly days of December and January, Washington Park Arboretum is a breathtaking place to be. Yes, the leaves are gone, and many birds have flown south, but the Arboretum is still full of life: juncos and jays, hawks and owls, neighbors enjoying a run or walking a dog.

Our evergreen trees still glisten. The Witt Winter Garden comes to life, offering striking colors, textures, and fragrances, and providing a rare winter abundance of flowers, seeds, and fruit to create a sensory delight for our visitors.

It promises to be another exciting year here at the Arboretum. As they do each year,

  • 250,000 people will enjoy the magic of this place and creat lifetime memories in our treasured 230-acre park of plant collections, trails, and wetlands;
  • 6,500 children in grades K-12 will learn to appreciate the importance of trees in our environment through our outdoor education classes;
  • 2,500 people will enjoy our family and community outreach programs.

We’re also looking forward to planting the 2.5-acre New Zealand Forest at Pacific Connections in late spring and early summer, and to celebrating the new garden with all our friends and donors.

And of course, there’s our Opening Night Party at the Northwest Flower & Garden Show, all our great plant sales, and other exciting events throughout the year. We hope to see you soon, whatever season it might be.

Happy new year! And thank you for all your support.

Paige Miller
