Bike and Bus
Metro bus routes 43 and 48 run near the Arboretum on 24th Avenue, in Montlake. Ask for the McGraw street stop. Walk east on nearby East Lynn Street to access the Arboretum and cross over the Wilcox footbridge to reach the Graham Visitors Center. If you are coming from Madison Street, take route 11, get off at Lake Washington Boulevard East, and walk north into the Arboretum. Several buses coming from the Eastside exit at Montlake. Use Metro’s Trip Planner to determine the best route.
Arboretum Drive East, one of the two main roads inside the Arboretum, is bike-friendly. Cyclists also use Lake Washington Boulevard; however, be aware that traffic volume can be high and lanes are narrow. You can reach Arboretum Drive East from Madison Street by briefly cycling north on Lake Washington Boulevard and turning right just past the exit to the Seattle Japanese Garden parking lot. If you’re coming from the University District, cross Montlake Bridge and follow the signs for MOHAI and the Arboretum.
Arboretum Drive East is closed to general vehicular traffic. Exceptions include cars carrying visitors with physical limitations, emergency and service vehicles, and park permit holders (per Seattle Municipal Code 18.12.210).
Driving: from Downtown
Drive east on Madison Street, away from the Puget Sound. Follow it through Capitol Hill and the Central District into Madison Valley. Turn left (north) on Lake Washington Boulevard (LWB) to enter the Arboretum. To reach the Graham Visitors Center, continue on LWB and veer to the right after passing under the Wilcox Footbridge onto East Foster Island Road. Turn right onto Arboretum Drive East and take a sharp left to enter the parking lot of the Visitors Center.
Driving: from I-5
Take exit 168B for SR-520/Bellevue-Kirkland. Merge onto SR-520 and take the first exit to Montlake Boulevard. Cross straight through the signal onto East LWB, which becomes LWB East. Turn left off LWB East onto East Foster Island Road at the stop sign, then right on Arboretum Drive East to reach the Graham Visitors Center.
Driving: from SR-520 West
After crossing Lake Washington on SR-520, take the first exit onto LWB East. Turn left at the stop sign off the ramp. Take the next left onto East Foster Island Road and turn right onto Arboretum Drive East to access the Graham Visitors Center.
Parking is available for the public in several designated areas. Large parking lots can be found at the Graham Visitors Center and the Seattle Japanese Garden.
