Wetlands of the Washington Park Arboretum

All great cities have a soul, and Seattle’s arises from a deep entanglement with the wild. We are surrounded by slumbering volcanoes, pierced through by massive, unexpected runs of salmon. Eagles choose our trees to raise their young. Coyotes still howl at night. And on the water’s edge, pinned between the freeway and quiet, orderly neighborhoods, there exists a place with more wildness, beauty, and surprise than could be imagined.

Washington Park Arboretum is a spectacular 230-acre public garden on the shores of Lake Washington, just east of downtown Seattle. It contains many internationally recognized collections of woody plants, including maples, oaks, Sorbus, and hollies. At its northern end, it is also home to an intricate network of beautiful wetlands teeming with native wildlife—herons, ducks, owls, eagles, beavers, turtles, and much more.

“The Wild Within” is a stunning book of photographs documenting the rich diversity of wildlife and flora in the wetlands of the Arboretum. Created in 2007 by the non-profit Wetland Alliance, LLC, to raise awareness about the value and unique beauty of this urban wilderness, “The Wild Within” features more than 120 full-color images of wetland birds, animals, and scenery by 18 local photographers. The photos are accompanied by inspirational essays from friends and neighbors of the wetlands, including former Governor Dan Evans and Dale Chihuly.

“The Wild Within” costs $29.95 per copy. Copies are available at the Arboretum Shop in the Graham Visitors Center (2300 Arboretum Drive East, Seattle).
