2015 Spring Appeal for Support
Dear Friend of the Arboretum,
Your support is the reason the Arboretum looks so stunning right now! Can you imagine what the Arboretum would look like without any weeding, pruning, or mowing? It would not be the place we know and love today. Thank you for providing crucial support that allows us to fund full-time gardeners to keep your park vibrant and beautiful.
My background in finance is the reason I was asked to join the Arboretum Foundation board ten years ago, but that was just the beginning of my involvement here. Over the years I have stuck my nose in just about every activity the Foundation supports, including committee work and seeking political support—even getting my hands dirty as a volunteer Garden Steward! Being involved in so many different ways has shown me the important role that the Arboretum plays in the life of this city, and the deep personal connection individuals and families have to this special place. I can’t tell you how much pleasure it gives me to walk through the Arboretum and see so many people enjoying the park in so many different ways.
In the last week I have seen:
- Seattleites and visitors from afar marveling at the beauty of Azalea Way;
- High school cross country teams jogging on the paths;
- Parents teaching their kids about bugs and plants.
Where else in the city are we able to have so many rich experiences in nature?
My enthusiasm has apparently rubbed off on a few others. My wife, Zanny, has become a regular Arboretum Shop volunteer and a member of the planning committee for the Opening Night Party & Auction. My daughter, Hilary, is a Garden Steward and volunteers at special events. Last month, we worked together as markers at the FlorAbundance spring plant sale!
I confess that my involvement with the youth education programs at the Arboretum has been limited. But, as a new, first-time grandfather, I have a distinct feeling that this is about to change. Watching my grandson’s eyes light up as he experiences nature in the Arboretum renews in me how important it is to protect this Seattle treasure.
It’s a privilege to be part of the community of members and volunteers who support the Arboretum. People who spend time here are deeply motivated by a desire to preserve and maintain this special place. I have never before worked with such a dedicated group of individuals, and my continued involvement is as much for the people as the place. Thank you for being part of the community of supporters for the Arboretum!
As the Board Treasurer, I’m always surprised by the number of people who don’t realize that the Arboretum Foundation funds the maintenance and education programs here. Unlike many arboreta across the country, ours does not charge admission fees because keeping the Washington Park Arboretum accessible to all is very important. The Arboretum’s survival is dependent on contributions from folks like you and me. Every year, the Foundation provides more than $300,000 for the care of the plant collections and the support of the Education Program. Without your support, the Arboretum would not be the wonderful urban green space that we all cherish.
Your financial support funds:
- Educators who work every year with over 6,500 local kids, teaching the importance of nature;
- Gardeners who weed, prune, plant, and more;
- Arborists who work tirelessly to keep our park safe.
I’m writing today to ask you to make an investment in these programs and in the Washington Park Arboretum. Please join me in giving today to keep these programs going!
You will be investing in the next generation—in bright-eyed inquisitive kids like my grandson! Your gift of any amount will help in our shared goal of protecting and enhancing the Arboretum.
