Volunteer
Garden Judging: The Best “Job” Around!
Arboretum Foundation Members: If you’re an enthusiastic garden sightseer, you’re just the person
the annual Pacific Northwest Gardens Competition is looking for!
The competition is seeking volunteer judges for 2008, and as a judge, your job will be to go out, visit gardens, and help decide which one should win the grand prize—a trip to the Chelsea
Flower Show. To be a garden competition judge, you need to meet the following requirements:
- Be available to judge on one or two weekend days between July 12 to 27;
- Attend a wonderful party and awards ceremony on July 30;
- Love visiting gardens and talking to other passionate gardeners!
First-time judges also need to attend a 2 1⁄2-hour training session at the Graham Visitors Center, either on May 22, at 6 p.m., or May 23, at 10 a.m. New judges will be teamed up with veteran judges. If you would like to be a judge for the 2008 competition, please contact Amy Forsberg.
Volunteers provide crucial
services in every corner of the Arboretum's 230 acres. Both experienced
and novice gardeners volunteer, but you don't have to be a gardener
to help! Training is provided for all positions. Opportunities include:
- Propagating, potting, and caring for plants in the Pat Calvert
Greenhouse or Plant Donations program.
- Maintaining grounds and plant collections.
- Conducting educational, hands-on tours for children or adults.
- Helping with special events including the spring and fall plant
sales, Greens Galore, and the Northwest Flower & Garden Show Preview
Gala.
- Assisting in the Arboretum Foundation office.
- Working in the Arboretum Shop.
